Dip into La Mexiquense to escape summertime heat

Warning: Looking at La Mexiquense’s menu online may cause an uncontrollable urge to jump out of your seat and drive to the snack shop in a frenzy.

(Scrolling down won’t help. In fact, it might make it worse.

La Mexiquense comes to its location at 1207 U.S. Highway 79 at the perfect time – as Texas enters the season of scorching temps and even hotter cravings. Having opened his quaint Mexican paletería about a month ago, owner Alfredo Sanchez excitedly noted his love for the opportunity he believes lies ahead.

“I like the city, and I also liked the location,” Sanchez said, adding the Highway 79/Sunrise Road spot offers plenty of motorists passing by regularly.

The Round Rock shop marks La Mexiquense’s second location. The first, located in North Austin, serves customers out of a cozy, more tucked-away spot. Now, with a new, more visible storefront, fans further north have a more convenient way to satisfy their paleta cravings.

The menu largely consists of popsicles (ice cream and ice varieties), ice cream and an assortment of refreshing drinks to cool down with on a hot summer day.

The popsicles range from vanilla to tamarind with chili. In between, you’ll find strawberry, tropical fruits, chocolate, horchata (rice and cinnamon) and more.

The ice cream flavor palette largely mirrors that of the popsicles, with a few variations, including coffee flavors.

Drink options include tropical fruit aguas frescas, chilled horchata, and cool cucumber-infused water.

For those seeking less sweet options, La Mexiquense offers a specialized snack menu, at times combining two snacks into one (aka, the Dorinachos). Churros, pork rinds and elote en vaso (corn in a cup) are among the other options.

Find La Mexiquense online at lamexiquenseaustin.com or stop by from noon to 9 p.m. each Monday-Tuesday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday.
