Toasted Yolk livening up breakfast in Round Rock

Neighborhood eatery opens off Palm Valley

With the exception of a few spots at the bar, nary an empty seat could be found at the restaurant.

And this was Week 1.

Round Rock has quickly gotten to know The Toasted Yolk, a new breakfast, brunch and lunch hangout in Suite 300 of the H-E-B shopping center at 1700 E. Palm Valley Blvd. The restaurant opened Jan. 27, becoming the 52nd franchise location in operation.

“We’re trying to give you a hearty meal to start your day, and hopefully put a ray of sunshine on your face,” said Round Rock co-owner Jamal Malveaux. “The community is really welcoming us.”

Malveaux touched on Toasted Yolk’s atmosphere, which on Week 1 was filled with the sounds of business professionals, family members and friends enjoying breakfast plates, sandwiches, salads and drinks. He noted the restaurant’s location is aided by its busy thoroughfare, H-E-B and Round Rock’s make-up.

“One thing we noticed about Round Rock is it has a unique blend of professionalism and family,” he said. “It’s close to a big city but still has a small town feel.”

The menu features just about anything you can imagine being served for breakfast or lunch, often with a modern twist:

  • Shrimp and grits: Toasted Yolk’s signature dish, with cheese grits in a buttery mix of shrimp, bacon and diced tomatoes
  • Arnolds: Poached eggs served with varying proteins on delicate muffins
  • The Toasted Yolk: Slices of sourdough bread grilled with eggs in the middle, accompanied by a protein and grits or hashbrown casserole
  • Omelettes, waffles and more: All the usual breakfast items you’d expect to find in a café, including scrambled eggs, buttermilk pancakes, Belgian waffles and French toast
  • Sandwiches and salads: Share a well-layered sandwich like a Reuben, club or BLT or nibble on a hefty Salmon, Chicken or Strawberry Field Salad

“You may need a nap afterward,” said Malveaux. “Our portions are huge.”

Of course, what differentiates The Toasted Yolk from other cafes is its extensive drink menu. Its full bar includes a suite of coffee offerings, tea, energy drinks and mimosas, as well as juices and soft drinks.

The Toasted Yolk was founded in 2010 by longtime friends in Houston, but has since spread beyond Texas to Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Arizona. It currently has more than 10 restaurants in development.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. seven days a week.
