If you’ve logged onto social media in the past week, you’ve probably seen videos of people grabbing toilet paper as it’s being stocked or pictures of your friends posing in front of empty shelves. As government officials ask us to stay indoors to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it’s pretty counterintuitive to stand in line next to strangers as you rush to stock up on supplies. Luckily, several local stores are implementing measures to allow you to get necessary groceries (key word here is “necessary” — try not to be “that guy” who is hoarding all the rice) while following safe social distancing guidelines. And the truth is, most grocery stores say they’ve got plenty of goods, but just need time to restock them (kind of like Black Friday, y’all!). Here’s what a few grocers that have stores locally have said:

We understand our customers want to prepare by stocking up on the essentials. Texans must continue to prepare, but panic does not promote progress. In order to help ensure all can secure the products they need, when they need them, we’ve implemented limits on certain items because we know limits will help protect the supply chain in Texas. While our customers might find our supply of some products low or temporarily out of stock, please rest assured knowing that we’re maintaining close contact with our suppliers and our Partners are working around-the-clock to keep our shelves stocked. We encourage customers to check back with us if they cannot find what they need, as we’ll continue to restock our products.

Our stores are working very hard to maintain in-stock conditions for all items. We ask for your patience since customer demand has been unusually high and many items have been selling out quickly.
We’ve also instituted item limits for online orders (maximum quantity of 10 per item). We also ask you to respect in-store item quantity restrictions so all our customers have a chance to purchase the items they need.
While our supply chains have experienced no disruptions, many manufacturers have experienced increased sales and their item inventory is extremely low. In addition, some manufacturers have eliminated production of certain items to focus production on high-demand items. Please be assured that as products become available we’ll be bringing them into stores and making them available for online purchase.

We’re committed to offering you access to the healthy foods you rely on us for during this unprecedented time. Our local teams are working hard to keep our stores stocked by working closely with our distribution center and supply chain partners to ensure regular deliveries. We’re confident in our continued supply and ask you to be mindful of your neighbors when making purchases on your next visit. We will continue to offer delivery and pickup services where applicable through Instacart.

In response to the extreme demands on the stores, Walmart Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets are closing overnight. Apart from the needed time to restock, this change in operating hours has helped store associates take the time to clean and sanitize as well.
