Say ‘Namaste’ to Desi Brothers Farmers Market

A brightly colored food delivery vehicle adorned with various designs and Gujarati lettering greets visitors to Desi Brothers Farmers Market before they even walk in.

Once inside, patrons continue to get a subtle introduction to India itself:

  • Sliding glass doors open, revealing bundles of traditional Jai Mala garlands, used at weddings and funerals alike, hanging from above.
  • To the left, they take in a view of rows of fruits and vegetables from around the globe, including parval gourds; white eggplant; and watermelon-like Bengali squash, commonly used in curry.
  • Further back, you’ll find stacks of rice and flour, herbal powders and a huge variety of spices. You can even take in items such as Ghee clarified butter; Indian sweets Rasmalai, ladoo and milk cake; and different flavors of camel milk.
  • And near the aisles of “super strong” instant coffee with chicory and rows of Hindu god figurines, one can discover the joys of herbal toothpaste, known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-hemorrhagic properties.

Store Manager Patel points out how the company is expanding across the country, with stores in Alabama, Georgia, Minnesota, Tennessee and Texas. Desi Brothers already has two Austin locations, including one on Parmer Lane, and another is slated for Leander.

Desi Brothers is located in the Round Rock Crossing shopping center at 3203 S. Interstate 35, next to Best Buy.

At nearly 55,000 square feet, the Round Rock location rivals the Parmer Lane location, which is normally very busy, Patel added. Having opened in late March, the Round Rock store is already attracting area residents as well as Indian restaurant owners.

Hopefully here to stay, we bid a fond “namaste” to Desi Brothers Farmers Market!

GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO SHOP

Want better roads? How about better parks? All you have to do is Shop the Rock. Seriously, head over to the outlets and buy those shoes, or venture downtown for lunch. It doesn’t matter if you are shopping, dining or getting a haircut your dollars are helping to pay it forward and build our community. What makes this possible? Sales tax. Though it may be the least sexy tax, it is the hardest working one. So next time you see a shirt you love, buy it. Your city will thank you.
